“I started tutoring Brooklyn in the beginning of 2022 when he was in third grade. Brooklyn felt anxious and unconfident about math. Improvement didn't come instantly; harder concepts like fractions took months to develop. Through consistent efforts and weekly tutoring sessions, Brooklyn’s test scores started to improve. Concepts began to “click" and soon, he felt like he could do any math problem that came his way. Test scores went from Cs and Ds to As, and math became one of Brooklyn’s favorite subjects.
In the spring of 2024, I received a joyful text from Brooklyn’s parents sharing that he won the best performing student in mathematics within the African American community at the school district. Attending his award ceremony a month later and seeing Brooklyn up on the stage with a big smile on his face reminded me of why I do this in the first place.
My hope is to continue to build students’ confidence, transforming math from a source of anxiety and struggle to a source of pride and joy, ultimately helping students succeed both academically and in life.”
